Abstract

The sulfonation of arylphosphines, i.e. mono-, di-, oligo- and polyphosphines, which contain at least one aromatic radical capable of being sulfonated, is carried out in the presence of a Lewis acid at 0.degree. to 80.degree. C. The process avoids side-reactions, in particular the formation of phosphine oxides. In treating the sulfonation mixture, the Lewis acid can be removed together with the sulfuric acid.
