Abstract

A navigation system includes a display, a map data storage device, a display control device, an intersection numbering device, a number indication control device, an intersection number input device, and a route determination device. The intersection numbering device prepares intersection numbers with respect to each intersection included in map data stored in the map data storage device. The number indication control device identifies each intersection on a road map displayed on a screen by indicating each displayed intersection with a respective intersection number. A user can specifically designate desired route intersections by inputting the corresponding intersection numbers indicated on the screen. Thus, a desired route can be readily and correctly determined. Since the map data does not originally contain the intersection numbers, the map data is small in volume, and a wide variety of map data, such as those with a different display color or layout, can be used for the navigation system.
