Abstract
A recording/playback device for a magnetic tape includes a rotary drum about which the magnetic tape is wrapped obliquely, two recording heads arranged within the rotary drum at an angular distance of substantially 180.degree. from each other for recording data, and two playback heads arranged within the rotary drum at an angular distance of substantially 180.degree. from each other for reproducing recorded data. The recording heads and the playback heads are substantially orthogonally arranged within the rotary drum. There is a height difference between the playback heads and the recording heads related to a track pitch of a recording format for a particular magnetic tape, with the playback heads being mounted at a lower position relative to the recording heads. The recording/playback device also includes a signal processing circuit for recognizing the readout timing of playback data sequentially entered from the playback heads for monitoring the data recorded by the recording heads.
