Abstract

A carbonless paper solvent is provided comprising diisopropylmethylnaphthalene, generally in an amount of from 20% to 100% of the total weight of the solvent. The solvent is combined with a chromogenic substance and is encapsuled into microcapsules. The microcapsules are applied to a sheet of material and a color developing substance is then applied to another sheet to form a carbonless marking system. When the microcapsules are ruptured, the solubilized chromogenic substance contacts and reacts with the developer to form an image. In a method of the invention, a byproduct fraction consisting of components with a boiling point range of 200.degree. to 400.degree. C. are contacted with propylene under conditions sufficient to form an alkylation product comprising diisopropylmethylnaphthalene.
