Abstract
A silanol compound having a mesogenic group, of the following formula (III): ##STR1## wherein each of R.sup.5 and R.sup.6, which may be the same or different, is an alkyl group or a phenyl group, X is a single bond, an oxygen atom, or a group of the formula --COO--or 'OCO--, Q is a mesogenic group, and p is an integer of from 2 to 20, and a process for its production. Also disclosed are a polymerizable monomer of the following formula (I) and a polymer having repeating units of the following formula (II). ##STR2## wherein R is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group or a phenyl group, each of R.sup.1 to R.sup.6 which may be the same or different, is an alkyl group or a phenyl group, m is an integer of from 2 to 20, n is an integer of from 0 to 50, and X, Q and p are as defined above.
