Abstract

An optically active glycidyl ether, which is useful in making .gamma.-lactone containing liquid crystalline compounds, the ether having the following formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is a group selected from the group consisting of ##STR2## n is 0 or 1; e is 1; R.sup.3 is an alkyl group having 1 to 15 carbon atoms; and the symbol * is an asymmetric carbon atom.
