Abstract
An optically active azo compound is represented by the following general formula (I), ##STR1## where R is an alkyl group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, and R* is an optically active radical of an alkyl group or a halogen substituted alkyl group having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms. A liquid crystal composition contains this compound. A method for producing an optically active azo compound represented by the following general formula (I) has the step of reacting a phenol compound represented by the following general formula (II) with an optically active carboxylic acid represented by the following general formula (III) using a condensing agent at a room temperature. ##STR2##
