Abstract
Liquid crystal compositions comprising: at least one of the compounds of the general formula (I) and at least one of the compounds of the general formula (II); and optionally including at least one of the compounds of the general formula (III), or, when compound (III) is present, optionally including at least one of the compounds of the general formula (IV) are provided. ##STR1## All the symbols are as defined in the appended claims, namely, R.sup.1 is an alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms; R.sup.2 is an alkyl group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms; R.sup.3 is an alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms; R.sup.4 is an alkyl group having 2 to 8 carbon atoms; R.sup.5 is H or F; R.sup.6 is an alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, an alkoxyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, F, or a CN group; and R.sup.7 is an alkyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms or an alkenyl group having 2 to 10 carbon atoms. The compositions are suitable for use in highly multiplexed displays of the supertwisted birefringence effect mode.
