Abstract

A magnetic disk apparatus includes a magnetic head, a magnetic disk, and a rotary actuator to move the magnetic head onto the magnetic disk. The rotary actuator includes a center shaft fixed to a disk enclosure, a carriage supporting the magnetic head and rotatably mounted to the center shaft, and a coil spring to return the carriage to a CSS zone when there is a breakdown or failure of the power supply of the magnetic disk apparatus. The coil spring is provided in a space formed between the center shaft and the carriage, and thereby can achieve a more compact magnet disk apparatus. Moreover, due to the assembly of the return coil spring around the shaft using a pair of end ring members, contact of the spring with the shaft and carriage is avoided and proper operation of the magnetic heads is ensured.
