Abstract

Methods and apparatuses for quantitatively measuring the strengths, pore pressures, and mechanical properties of low permeability geologic materials, such as shales, including test specimen preparation apparatus for adjusting test specimen water content and test apparatus with an end cap having a pore pressure transducer channel disposed adjacent a test specimen filled with an immiscible, inert fluid which does not wet the test specimen, and controlling the deviatoric load on the test specimen during the test to prevent premature failure.
