Abstract
A valved catheter is disclosed having an elongate, flexible tubular element defining a lumen extending along an axis substantially Parallel to the central axis of said tubular element, and a unidirectional valve assembly near its distal end which controls fluid flow in the tubular element. The valve is generally defined by a top flap portion and a base portion. The top flap portion includes a flap valve surface which is complementary to a base valve surface when there is substantially no pressure difference between the lumen and outside the catheter. When a pressure differential exists between the lumen and outside the catheter, the top valve surface and base valve surface separate to form an opening for fluid flow therethrough. The direction of fluid flow through the valve aperture is determined by the pressure differential. A multi-lumen catheter assembly is also disclosed.
