Abstract

A process for the preparation of alkenes by contacting a feed containing one or more C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 alkanes at an elevated temperature with a catalyst containing 1-15% w vanadia, calculated as divanadium pentoxide relative to the weight of the catalyst, on a refractory support, where the feed is contacted with the catalyst at a temperature of 600.degree. C. or above during less than 4 seconds.
