Abstract

A method is disclosed to provide a ceramic article with a protective coating which resists mechanical wear at elevated temperatures up to 500.degree. C. and higher. The coating is applied by first chemically depositing the oxide product layer of a transition metal element on the uncoated ceramic surface and thereafter vapor depositing an adherent organic polymer lubricating film on the oxide product layer. Ceramic materials provided with such protective coating include silicon carbide, silicon nitride and vitreous silica.
