A stable, nitrogen-rich organic compound in the form of diguanidinium-5,5zotetrazolate having the empirical formula C.sub.4 H.sub.12 N.sub.16, is with a pulverulent, chemically stable oxidizer as a pyrotechnic mixture for spontaneously generating environmentally friendly, non-toxic gases.
