Abstract

The modified basil essential oil of the present invention comprises 87% by weight or more of sesquiterpene compounds. The process for the production of a modified basil essential oil of the present invention comprises rectifying basil essential oil to thereby distill a fraction of a boiling point of from 82.degree. to 92.degree. C. under reduced pressure (2.0 to 3.0 mmHg), treating the distillate with an alkali and removing the aqueous phase to thereby give a modified basil essential oil containing 87% by weight or more of sesquiterpene compounds.
