Abstract
2,2-Dihydrocarbyl-3-propiolactones are prepared by the thermolysis at 175.degree. C. to 350.degree. C. of low molecular weight (oligomeric) poly(3-hydroxy-2,2-dihydrocarbylpropionic acid) that contains carboxyl ends groups, in the presence of alkali metal, ammonium or phosphonium cations. The propiolactones may be polymerized to high molecular weight polymers.
