Abstract

Methylnorbornene dicarboxylic anhydride is produced from a C.sub.6 -C.sub.7 fraction containing 5-methylcyclopentadiene by carrying out the reaction in the presence of a maleic anhydride and a protonic acid at a temperature of 0.degree.-50.degree.C., whereby the 5-methylcyclopentadiene is isomerized to 1-MCPD and 2-MCPD which undergo a Diels-Alder reaction to form methylnorbornene dicarboxylic anhydride.
