Abstract

Menthyl pyran compounds are provided repesented by the formula 1: ##STR1## wherein R is H or lower acyl or 1-3 carbon atoms; R' is H, hydroxyl, or C.sub.1-3 acyloxy, and the dotted line represents an optional double bond. Use of the compounds provides a menthol note upon pyrolysis or hydrolysis. Smoking compositions containing a compound of formula 1 are also included.
