Abstract

A methine compound represented by the following formula and an agent containing the same for coloring resins such as polystyrene, ABS. ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group, a lower alkoxy group, a nitro group or a lower carboxylic ester group; R.sup.2 is a lower alkyl group, a lower carboxylic amide group or a lower carboxylic ester group; and X is --SO.sub.2 NR.sup.3 R.sup.4, --SO.sub.2 NCHNR.sup.5 R.sup.6 or --SO.sub.2 R.sup.7, where R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a phenyl group, R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 each is a lower alkyl group, and R.sup.7 is a lower alkyl group or a hydroxyethyl group.
