Abstract

A method of forming a silver image receiving element in diffusion transfer photography by hydrolyzing a surface of an alkali-impermeable polymer layer on a continuous running web so as to convert the polymer to an alkali-permeable polymer. The method includes the steps of first applying a liquid mixture of a hydrolyzing agent and a softening agent to the surface of the alkali-impermeable polymer layer, evaporating the softening agent in the liquid mixture by blowing air on the surface to form a concentrated layer of the hydrolyzing agent; and thereafter accelerating the occurrence of hydrolysis by blowing air on the surface so as to initiate hydrolysis reaction of the surface to as to convert the alkali-impermeable polymer layer to an alkali-permeable polymer layer. The temperature of the air which is blown on the surface is in the range of 50.degree. to 120.degree. C.
