Compounds of the formula I ##STR1## can be prepared by various process steps from 2-(4-methylphenyl)-2-hexafluoroisopropanol. Hexafluoroisopropyl-containing monomers are important starting compounds in the preparation of linear polycarboxamides and polycarboximides.
