Abstract
A neodymium laser provides output at about 1.44 .mu.m, by selection of a neodymium doping level of between about 0.3 and 0.7N, preferably at 0.4N with reflectivity of the output mirror at about 90% for 1.44 .mu.m output. Selection of the reflectivity of the output mirror is adjusted to ensure that the excess of the gain over the absorption and transmission losses is maximized.
