Abstract

Pyrimidine derivatives useful as plant growth regulating agents have the formula (I) : ##STR1## wherein Y is an optionally substituted tertiary alkyl group --C(R.sup.3 R.sup.4 R.sup.5) wherein R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are separately hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl group, provided that (a) no more than one of R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 is hydrogen and that (b) R.sup.3, and R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are not all methyl or halomethyl at the same time and that (c) the group Y contains a total of from 4 to 10 alkyl carbon atoms; R.sup.1 is a group --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --C.ident.C--A or (CH.sub.2).sub.n --CH.dbd.CH--A or (CH.sub.2).sub.p --A wherein A is an optionally substituted phenyl group, m and n are integers from 0 to 2 and p is an integer from 2 to 4, or R.sup.1 contains from 4 to 8 carbon atoms and is optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylalkyl, alkylcycloalkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkenyl, cycloalkenylalkyl, alkylcycloalkenyl or alkynyl; and R.sup.2 is hydrogen, or an alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl group containing from 3 to 4 carbon atoms.
