Abstract

An elliptical core fiber has a first end and a second end, the second end comprising a mirrored surface. An in-line polarizer is formed along the elliptical core fiber, and the first end is connected to a single-mode optical fiber by a misaligned splice. Sensors of this nature are formed in a grid and detect acoustic emissions which are caused by breaks in the composite material.
