Abstract

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided substituted naphthalene compounds represented by the following formula [I]. ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents alkyl of 1-18 carbon atoms, R.sup.2 represents alkyl of 1-18 carbon atoms, X is a group represented by --OCH.sub.2 -- or --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 --, and n is 0 or 1. In accordance with the invention, moreover, there is provided liquid crystal compositions containing the substituted naphthalene compounds represented by the above-mentioned formula [I].
