Abstract

There is provided a process for the regeneration and/or purification of contaminated process sulfolane or spent sulfolane. The process includes passing contaminated or spent sulfolane through a pair of columns arranged in series, with the first of the columns containing cation exchanger resin and the second containing anion exchanger resin. The contact between the sulfolane and the ion exchange resins is effected at a temperature of from 20.degree. to 80.degree. C.
