Abstract

New process for the preparation of 4,5,6-trichloropyrimidine, characterized in that a protonated dialkylaminopropionitrile of the general formula I ##STR1## in which R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl and an.sup.- is an anion is treated with chlorine in an inert solvent in the presence of organic catalysts or PCl.sub.3 or PCl.sub.5.
