Abstract

Unsaturated esters with an alkyl group at the 2 carbon, such as methyl methacrylate, react with .beta.-aminoalkanols, such as 2-aminoethanol, in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide or hydroxide such as sodium methoxide, under moderate temperatures to form an amide such as N-(2-hydroxyethyl)methacrylamide. The amide may be cyclized by a weak Lewis acid, such as ferric chloride, at about 220.degree. C. to form a 2-alkenyl oxazoline, such as isopropenyl oxazoline.
