Abstract
Disclosed is a metal-based composite material comprising aluminum or an aluminum alloy combined with a whisker of aluminum borate represented by the chemical formula of 9Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.2B.sub.2 O.sub.3 or 2Al.sub.2 O.sub.3.B.sub.2 O.sub.3. This composite material has excellent mechanical properties such as high tensile strength and high hardness.
