Abstract
Benzyl ketones of the general formula I ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl which is unsubstituted or substituted by cycloalkyl or aryl and R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, hydroxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy or C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 -methylenedioxy, are prepared by a process in which a glycol monoether of the general formula II ##STR2## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 have the abovementioned meanings and R.sup.4 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl, is converted in the presence of silica, a phosphate or a zeolite at from 50.degree. to 500.degree. C. and under from 0.01 to 50 bar.
