Skin diseases are treated by topical application of p-substituted phenoxy alkanols having the structure: ##STR1## in which: R.sub.1 substituted in ortho, meta or para position is selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl having from one to six carbon atoms, preferably para-chlorine or para-tertiary-butyl; and bivalent cycloalkylene condensed with the phenyl group at adjacent ring carbons thereof, such as in indane;
