Abstract

A process is disclosed for the preparation of .beta.-ketocarboximides of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated amides from 1,3-dioxin-4-ones and .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated amides using an inert solvent system capable of maintaining both reactants substantially in homogeneous solution throughout the reaction. This process provides greatly improved yields of .alpha.,.beta.-ketocarboximides of .alpha.,.beta.-unsaturated amides as well as a simple method of recovering same since such products can readily be precipitated from the reaction mixture.
