Abstract

A safety flow stopper in a water-cooled electric arc furnace electrode comprises a bob 16 held in place above a valve seat 12 by a release pin 17 resting on the bottom of the cavity in the nipple 20. If the electrode fails the release pin will no longer support the bob which will seat in the valve seat, shutting off the coolant flow and averting an explosion in the furnace.
