Abstract

Novel flame retardant agents comprise polyalkylene oxides or a derivative thereof and end-capped with brominated phthalimide groups, and have the general formulae ##STR1## R.sup.1 is alkylene of from about 2 to about 6 carbon atoms; R.sup.1 is alkyl of from about 1 to about 6 carbon atoms; n is from about 4 to about 40; n' is from about 3 to about 15; and n' is from about 1 to about 10. Thermoplastic compositions, for example, polyphenylene ether compositions, rendered flame retardant with the novel compounds have a high resistance to additive vaporization and surface liquid exudation as well as desirable high flow characteristics.
