Abstract

A fluorine-containing silane compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.f is a fluorine-containing C.sub.4 --C.sub.18 aliphatic group, R.sup.1 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, A is a straight or branched C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkylene group or a group of the formula: ##STR2## in which R.sup.2 is hydrogen or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 acyl group, R.sup.3 is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 acyl group, A' is a C.sub.2 -C.sub.8 alkylene group, A' is a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylene group, and Q is --CO-- or --SO.sub.2 --, B is a group of the formula: ##STR3## in which R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are each a straight or branched C.sub.2 or C.sub.3 alkylene group, and p is 2 or 3, X is chlorine or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkoxy group, X' is chlorine or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl or alkoxy group, a phenyl group or a glycidyl group, m is 0 or 1, and n is an integer of 0 to 40, which modifies surface characteristics of a solid substrate.
