Abstract

A method of preparing bromonitroalcohols of the formula ##STR1## where R.sub.1 is H, lower alkyl or R.sub.2, R.sub.2 is R.sub.3 CHOH in which R.sub.3 is H, alkyl or aryl, and X is a halogen, which comprises reacting a halonitroalkane with a substantially nonaqueous solutioln of an aldehyde of the formula R.sub.3 CHO where R.sub.3 is as noted above, in the presence of an alkaline catalyst. R.sub.3 preferably is lower alkyl or monocyclic aryl such as phenyl.
