Abstract

A method of preserving an aqueous system which is susceptible to microbiological degradation, comprising the step of adding to the system a compound having the formula ##STR1## wherein X is an anion selected from the group consisting of sulfate, acetate and citrate groups, and wherein the compound is added in an amount sufficient to inhibit the growth and proleferation of at least one microogranism in the aqueous system. The compounds 1-methyl-3,5,7-triaza-1-azoniatricyclodecane acetate and 1-methyl-3,5,7-triaza-1-azoniatricyclodecane citrate, and a method for preparing these compounds comprising the reaction of ammonium citrate, or ammonium acetate, with methylamine, formaldehyde and ammonia in an aqueous medium.
