Abstract
Salts of N-acetyl cysteine and N-acetyl homocysteine are prepared by reacting acetonitrile with cysteine or homocysteine in an aqueous or aqueous-organic medium adjusted to a pH in the range of 8 to 10 with a base supplying the cation of the salt. The reaction is carried out at a temperature in the range of 0.degree. C. to the boiling temperature of the reaction mixture.
