Abstract

An exhaust gas purifying apparatus for use in an internal combustion engine into which fuel is injected at a proper timing. The apparatus includes a catalytic trap located in the engine exhaust system for collecting the exhaust particles discharged thereto from the engine and burning the collected exhaust particles under catalytic action. A control unit controls the fuel injection timing in accordance with engine operating condictions. The control unit retards the fuel injection timing when the engine exhaust gas temperature is in a predetermined range and the pressure differential across the catalytic trap exceeds a reference value.
