Abstract
The present disclosure is directed to a process in solution for removing H.sub.2 S from a stream of natural gas. Sodium nitrite in the solution serves as an oxidizing agent for the H.sub.2 S. Buffering and defoaming agents are added. Absent a catalyst, the process suffers from conversion of the nitrite ion into NH.sub.3 which conversion is suppressed by the incorporation of a transition metal chelate complex. The metal is preferably chromium, copper or iron and the chelate complex is preferably EDTA or TEA, with acceptable performance obtained from HEEDTA or NTA. The metal chelate complex catalyzes the sodium nitrite oxidation of H.sub.2 S, markedly enhancing sulfur recovery as a precipitate in solution.
