Abstract

An electrochemical method for treating matter particularly waste matter in which AgII ions are primary oxidising species in an aqueous nitric acid electrolyte at about 50.degree. C., produce secondary oxidising species through interaction with the electrolyte and which decompose the waste matter. AgI ions produced in the course of the decomposition are converted back to AgII electrochemically.
