Abstract

This invention presents a series of blends of ASA-treated and cationic starches for use as external sizes of paper and paperboard products. The blends contain at least 30% (by wt) of the ASA-treated starch, which is a monoester of the starch and an alkyl or alkenyl succinate and, optionally, from about 0.5 to about 5% (by weight based on the starch) of an Al.sup.3+ salt.
