Abstract

Disclosed herein is a process for producing pitch-based carbon fibers having the specific properties comparable to those of polyacrylonitrile(PAN)-based carbon fibers, wherein an optically isotropic pitch obtained by polymerizing naphthalene at a temperature of not more than 330.degree. C. and heating the thus obtained polymeric material at a temperature of 330.degree. to 440.degree. C. while introducing an inert gas thereinto to remove volatile components therefrom, is subjected to melt-spinning, infusibilization (therosetting) and carbonization and the thus obtained carbonized-fibers are subjected to heat treatment at a temperature of not less that 900.degree. C. to obtain the carbon fibers.
