Abstract

(Z)-2-(2-arylethenyl)arylcarboxylic acids of the general formula I ##STR1## where A is a group for completing an aromatic ring system and Ar is an aromatic radical, are prepared by reacting a 2-formylarylcarboxylic acid of the general formula II ##STR2## with an (arylmethyl)phosphonium salt of the general formula III ##STR3## where R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are each organic radicals and X is halogen, in the presence of a base at from (-20.degree.) to +30.degree. C. by carrying out the reaction in the presence of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkanol and/or a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 -alkanediol.
