Abstract

An N-substituted chloroacetanilide represented by the following formula (I) ##STR1## wherein A represents a member selected from the class consisting of halogen atoms, alkoxy groups having a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl group, alkylthio groups having a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl group, and alkoxyalkyl groups having a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl group and having a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkylene group, R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are identical or different, and each represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl group, an alkoxy group having a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl group R is a hydrogen atom or a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, or an alkylthio group having a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl group, and n represents 1 or 2, and when n is 2, the two A's may be identical or different; a process for producing the above compound by reacting an N-substituted aniline with a chloroacetyl halogenide or by reacting a 2-substituted thiophene with a chloroacetanilide; and a herbicidal composition containing a herbicidally effective amount of the compound of formula (I).
