Abstract

The aminoglycoside and aminoglycotide N.sup.4 -(2,3,5-tri-O-acetyl-.beta.-D-ribofuranosyl)pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidine-4,8- diamine and N.sup.4 -(5-O-phosphono-.beta.-D-ribofuranosyl-pyrimido[4,5-d]pyrimidine-4,8-diami ne exhibit antiviral activity as well as cytotoxic activity against the L1210 and mammary 16/C tumor cell lines. An improved method for their production involves the production of a sylilated intermediate and reaction of the intermediate with tetra-O-acetyl-.beta.-D-ribofuranose in the presence of the specific catalyst trimethylsilyltrifluoromethanesulfonate.
