Abstract

A catalyst and process for production of an alpha, beta-ethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid made by condensing formaldehyde with, for example, propionic acid, which catalyst is made from a SiO.sub.2 -SnO.sub.2 mixed-oxide component consisting of porous silica gel and tin (IV) oxide and a cesium ion component.
