Abstract

A method for viscosifying a liquid hydrocarbon-based fracturing fluid is disclosed. The method comprises mixing together a liquid hydrocarbon, an acid, a phosphate composition and an aluminate activator. The phosphate composition comprises an organic phosphate ester selected from the group consisting of orthophosphate esters of the formulae ##STR1## wherein R is an alkyl group containing one to about eight carbon atoms and R' is selected fromt the group consisting of alkyl groups containing about six to about eighteen carbon atoms, alkenyl groups containing about six to about eighteen carbon atoms and mixtures thereof. Hydrocarbon-based fracturing fluids prepared by such method, and methods of use of such fluids are also disclosed.
