Abstract

A herbicidal composition which comprises as an active ingredient a trifluoromethanesulfonanilide of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are, same or different, each a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are, same or different, each a hydrogen atom, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.6 cycloalkyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.4 alkenyl group, a C.sub.3 -C.sub.5 alkynyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy group, a C.sub.6 -C.sub.7 aralkyl group, a C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxy(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl group or a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 acyl group or they may be combined together with the nitrogen atom to form a morpholino group, and X is a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 acyl group, provided that R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are not simultaneously hydrogen.
