Abstract
Disclosed is an essentially water-free biostable composition comprising at least one anionic water-soluble polymer containing carboxylate or sulfonate groups and small amounts of at least one cationic quaternary ammonium salt surfactant in a ratio, expressed as moles surfactant divided by mole equivalents of carboxylate or sulfonate groups in the polymer, of from about 0.025 to about 2.0 is provided, which is capable of forming highly viscoelastic solutions when mixed in an aqueous medium. By altering the ratio of cationic surfactant to anionic polymer within the specific ratio range, the viscosity of the aqueous solutions of the composition can be adjusted to a desired level. The aqueous solutions thereof are useful as thickeners in aqueous-based systems, such as latex paints and shampoos.
